When immigrants seeking safety, a chance to escape extreme poverty and a better life for their kids are faced with deportation, who can they turn to? In this episode of I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY, I talk to Gautam Jagannath, Founder and Executive Director of Social Justice Collaborate (SJC), a nonprofit organization that protects the rights of refugees who are being targeted by the U.S. government. As a lawyer certified by the State Bar of California as an Immigration & Nationality Law expert, Gautam, along with his team at SJC, has provided legal counsel to thousands of immigrants in the last decade, currently resolving one case per day on average. They provide legal representation to individuals seeking asylum from start to finish without referring cases, no matter how difficult. In that process, they get to know the stories behind the cases, personally, and tonight at 6pm PST/9pm EST, SJC will celebrate their virtual Gala entitled: Untold Stories of America. In their view “Immigrants’ identity should not be determined by a checkbox in a form or limited to a number, a statistic, or a problem to be solved. They are the only ones who can tell us who they really are. And we must change the way we listen to their stories if we want to grow into better human beings.” To attend register here: bit.ly/sjcgala21
